Where I Am

Symbols

What are the last few years? I’ve started to appreciate and understand the concept of using symbols as tools for thinking. Symbols can come in many shapes, and sizes and colors, icons or dance moves or hand positions or yoga positions or paintings.

I do not want to feel opposition to people who use symbols to understand things that are hard to understand. We use symbols all the time within mathematics and physics, and they are very helpful for understanding certain abstract concepts.

So I do not want to be in opposition against those who use symbols to understand spirituality and understand the experience of being a human.

Growing up in an Evangelical Christian world, I was taught often that worshiping idols is sinful; because "God is greater than the small trinket on your shelf". While I don't think it is bad to have symbols of spiritual ideas; I do think it can be bad when the symbol becomes more important than the ideas they represent. But I am letting go of finding judgement in the use of them.
